A unique artwork by Giles Newman, ‘The Fisherman’ Spoon was inspired by a fleeting encounter with a beautiful Kingfisher near his home in Northern England. With wonderful serendipity a recently found piece of Silver Birch wood had revealed delicately spalted patterning that graduated in colour from pale orange to sky blue and it was the positioning of these colours within the wood that guided the design of this piece.

Carved entirely by hand from a single piece of naturally fallen Silver Birch wood using only an axe and two knives, this piece represents some of Giles’ finest work to date with his signature style; bringing together naturalistic, figurative forms with elegant, organic design.

The Silver Birch for this spoon was responsibly sourced from a tree that fell during winter storms in the woodland Giles manages in North Wales, UK.

Declared by Time Inc., on their website FoodandWine.com, as “The World’s Most Beautiful Spoons”, Giles creates just a handful of pieces each year. Characterised by their intricate details, naturalistic flow and depth, Giles’ spoon carvings have become highly sought after with collectors and art lovers around the world.
